Which coats to sew this winter?

The coat is an impressive piece, and one that scares novice seamstresses: you have to handle fairly heavy fabrics, sew linings, deal with sometimes complex yokes…

But all it takes is patience and meticulousness to make this winter wardrobe essential yourself.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, here are a few trendy coats for the colder months!

A cape

This winter, the cape is making a comeback in our wardrobes. This strong piece can be worn with both a distinguished look and a casual outfit such as jeans and a sweater.

In both cases, it adds a highly original and elegant touch!

To sew a cape, you can use the Vestiaire Éponyme pattern, which has no collar and is therefore accessible to beginners.

If you’d like to add a stand-up collar, you can follow the Clématisse Pattern, which will be a little more complex to assemble.

For children, the Child King pattern includes a hood for rainy days and attractive contrasting finishes.

To keep your garment warm all winter long, choose a wool sheet and pay close attention to its composition. The higher the percentage of wool, the warmer and more breathable the fabric.

If you choose a black wool sheet, you can opt for a printed lining: checkered, floral or polka-dotted, to add a personal touch to the room.

The long coat

If you want to feel warm and comfortable in your clothes, the long coat is the way to go this winter. Very cozy and comfortable, it will be particularly in vogue over the next few months, especially in oversized forms.

If you already have coat patterns in your closet, you can adjust them by lengthening them and sewing one size larger than your usual size.

If you’ve never sewn a coat before, you can follow Pretty Mercerie’s Yokohama pattern. It’s accompanied by tutorials for all the technical points: welt pockets, buttonholes, lining… A great way to get started if you’ve never tried coatmaking before!

And to be perfectly on-trend, choose a gray wool sheet, which will be more fashionable this winter than black, or a herringbone woollen fabric. As with the cape, you can play with the color or pattern of the lining to add a touch of whimsy.

When lining a coat, choose a lightweight fabric that glides well and won’t snag your clothes. For example, polyester satin, viscose, cotton batiste, acetate

The coat with integrated scarf

In recent years, the “quiet luxury” trend has been gaining momentum. The idea behind this term is to wear clothes that are elegant, timeless and of good quality. And to remove anything that might be considered “flashy” in an outfit.

This fashion has given rise to minimalist brands such as Totême, inspired by Scandinavian design. In particular, this brand has popularized the scarf coat, a classic cut coat that is extended with a scarf to drape around the neck.

If you’d like to try your hand at this trend, follow the pattern from Av Alexandra or DP Studio. The idea is to use the same wool sheet for both the coat and the scarf. And choose a natural shade: sand, beige, taupe…

The short coat

If you don’t like long coats, short wool jackets will also be on trend this season. They can also be a good starting point for learning to sew thicker fabrics. You’ll have less impressive yardage to assemble.

To sew a short coat, you can follow Atelier Brizane’s Nima pattern (for adults). And theIkatee pattern (for children).

For this piece, you can choose a classic wool sheet or opt for a more original synthetic fabric such as plush, sherpa fabric, faux fur… And double them up to keep the jacket nice and warm.
