Which dresses to sew in preparation for winter?

Summer isn’t the only season to pull pretty dresses out of your closet. They’re also ideal for composing fall or winter looks with tights and a wool cardigan.

We’ll give you some ideas for sewing your next favorite dresses!

A red dress

This winter, we’re putting the little black dress back in the closet in favor of a flamboyant red dress! It’s sure to brighten up any gray day.

To bring out the best in this color, choose a loose-fitting garment with pretty draping effects like Glynis by Comme une fleur. Its long-sleeved version, with gathers at the waist and cuffs, adds a romantic touch to a strong hue.

When it comes to fabric, you’ll want to opt for flowing materials like viscose or double cotton gauze.

If you don’t feel like going for the red look, you can opt for red gingham. Or a red polka-dot print to soften the effect while keeping up with the trend.

A sweater dress

In autumn and winter, we’ll be seeing a lot of turtleneck dresses. A good way to protect yourself from the cold.

To follow this trend and make it your own, you can sew Comme une fleur’s Mapulin model , a long sweater with a crossover collar that rises to the neck, made using a brushed sweat fabric or a finer, slightly elastic jersey. Loose-fitting, this dress is ideal for everyday wear to keep you comfortable at the office.

For colors, you can opt for an understated shade such as charcoal gray, khaki green or chocolate brown.

Don’t forget the kids, and follow Atelier Adriette’s sweater dress pattern. It allows you to sew a dress in fleece, French terry (a non-scratch fleece) or fleece with a large pocket and hood.

Ideal for keeping warm in winter or for wearing around the house.

A tartan dress

Checks inspired by the famous Scottish kilt will be everywhere this season. On coats, skirts and dresses too.

You can easily find tartan fabric, either as a simple print on cotton or in its traditional wool version.

To make the most of this fabric, it’s best to choose a straight dress with a timeless look like this one from Muna Patterns, especially if you opt for a woollen fabric. The latter is lined, so the fabric won’t be itchy or uncomfortable to wear next to your skin.

For children, you can sew a chasuble dress (using Lydie.E’s pattern, for example), which is very easy to assemble and wear. Simply match it with an undershirt and wool tights for the perfect winter outfit.

A dress with puffed sleeves

For several months now, puffy dresses have been very much in vogue, summer and winter alike!

To sew a version that’s compatible with the cooler end-of-year temperatures, you can make the Lili dress from Clic Patterns in no time at all. Its simple shape makes it accessible to beginners.

All fabrics are suitable, from double cotton gauze to fine woollens and stiffer cottons.

To give this dress an even more original touch, choose a floral or plain fabric. This winter, the most fashionable colors are vitamin-packed: canary yellow, pink, red, pistachio green, mustard yellow, orange… All you have to do is choose!

A skater dress

Whether it’s hot or cold, the skater dress is a timeless staple of women’s wardrobes.

Sewn in slightly stretchy jersey, it combines elegance and comfort.

In winter, we prefer a long-sleeved version to wear with tights.

To sew this easy-to-assemble piece for beginners, you can follow the Comme une fleur pattern (for adults). Or the Gael and sew pattern (for children).

You’ll then need to choose a fairly fluid jersey to obtain the skirt’s lovely draped fall.
