How to Sew This Fall’s Trends?
The start of the school year is approaching, bringing with it a desire for a fresh start! And your wardrobe is no exception. If you’re looking to get back into sewing after a summer break—or simply want to add some new outfits to your wardrobe—here are a few trends that will be everywhere this season. They’re sure to inspire your next sewing projects.
The long-sleeved baseball T-shirt
This year, chic sportswear will once again be in style. We’ll be wearing pieces inspired by athletic wear: sweatshirts, soccer jerseys… And the famous baseball T-shirt, which already had its moment in the spotlight in the early 2000s. It’s a fairly classic long-sleeved T-shirt, distinguished by its raglan sleeves and, above all, its contrasting colors. You’ll want to choose one color for the collar and sleeves and another for the body.
The most common colors are white and bright red, but you can also use white and black, pink and green… Or even choose a print to add your own personal touch.
The Kandix pattern is designed for sewing a baseball T-shirt with a slightly oversized fit. To make it, choose a stretchy jersey fabric and make sure both fabrics are of the same weight.

A pair of Bermuda shorts for fall
Bermuda shorts are usually associated with spring and summer wardrobes. This year, we’ll continue to wear them into the fall.
On cooler days, add a pair of tights so you don’t get too cold. And to tone down the vacation vibe, wear it with a sweater and a trench coat, or with a T-shirt and a well-fitted blazer.
The Atelier Brunette pattern lets you make a cute pair of Bermuda shorts with a waistband and neat finishes. You’ll want to choose a fairly supple fabric, such as a lightweight gabardine. To stay on trend this season, opt for a plaid pattern or solid-color denim, for example. You can also choose black or brown faux leather, which will give the piece a truly fall-inspired look.
To make this garment, it’s best to be proficient with your sewing machine. It involves a few technical steps, such as attaching a fly, a waistband, and pockets.
A long printed skirt
Skirts will also be all the rage. This season, long skirts with a flowing drape are the way to go. Wear them with or without tights, pairing them with a simple T-shirt and a cute jacket.
The Ibaïa pattern from Instinct Couture is perfect for this trend. The pattern is easy to adjust to your size and preferred length. Sew it using a flowing viscose fabric. This skirt is a great piece for showing off this season’s trendy prints.
As for colors, we’ll be seeing a lot of purple, electric blue, and red. If you prefer more subdued colors, you might opt for beige, brown, navy blue, or black.
When it comes to prints, we’ll continue to see polka dots—both two-tone and multicolored. Animal prints—such as leopard, deer, and zebra—will also remain popular!

An oversized plaid shirt
Already in style for several seasons, the overshirt will continue to be a trend this fall. This piece is a must-have staple for your wardrobe: it can replace a jacket when the weather is still mild and be worn under a coat as fall sets in.
The Mondial Tissu pattern allows you to sew a basic version with three patch pockets. To make it, you’ll need to master certain techniques, including how to sew a buttonhole and a collar.
When it comes to fabric, you can choose denim for a timeless look, a print for a unique outfit, or checked cotton gabardine. If you prefer a lighter drape, you can opt for cotton voile or cotton poplin.
Velvet barrel pants
Since the beginning of the year, barrel-leg pants have been all the rage. They’re a comfortable style—tight at the waist and flared at the legs—that’s reminiscent of cowboy pants. We’ll continue to wear them when school starts, adapting them for cooler days.
We’re swapping out summer fabrics (lightweight cottons, linen, etc.) for more fall-appropriate fabrics like corduroy or faux suede.
You can follow the pattern from Ready to Sew, which is beginner-friendly since it closes at the waist with a simple elastic band. It’s a great way to get started if you’ve never sewn pants before.
What about you—what are you going to sew this fall? Do you like to draw inspiration from trends, or do you prefer to follow your own instincts?
