What colors and fabrics should you sew for spring?

Spring is synonymous with renewal! The return of flowers, sunshine and warmer temperatures invariably make you want to plan sewing projects.

We take a (sewing) look at the fabrics and colors that will be on trend this year and may inspire you for your next sewing projects.

Baby pink

This spring, pink will be everywhere! Especially the ” baby” shade , lighter than last year’s powder pink.

If you’re not used to wearing this color, or if you’re worried about wearing it on a piece that’s too strong, you can combine it with another shade, such as a more straightforward khaki green. Wear green pants with a pink top, for example.

Baby pink is ideal for a simple jersey t-shirt like this one from Capacha (or its children’s version), which comes in many sleeve variations and can be worn with simple jeans, dungarees or a skirt.

If you like original pieces, Fibre Mood’s Mona tank top is a very easy-to-sew pattern that can be worn over a t-shirt or shirt. It’s a great way to play with color combinations and break up the pale pink look.

Velvet

Comfortable and easy to wear, velvet, corduroy or not, will be in vogue this season. It adds an elegant touch to all your outfits, and pairs perfectly with other materials such as denim, jersey or flowing fabrics(cotton poplin, linen, cotton voile…) to lighten it up.

If you don’t usually put your coupons in the machine before sewing, do it for velvet! It tends to shrink after the first wash. And remember to clean your sewing machine once the project is finished, to remove any small fibers that get caught in the bobbin.

If you want to follow the velvet trend, you can sew an overshirt like this one from Miss Cactus, perfectly suited to mid-season, which you’ll wear with a thin t-shirt or tank top.

Or high-waisted shorts like these from Cha’Coud, which are just as suitable for spring as they are for summer.

Bright red

As opposed to baby pink, which is very soft and discreet, we’ll be seeing a lot of tomato red on spring clothes. A strong trend that can be easily adopted, either by sewing a piece such as a skirt, dress, jacket or overalls, or by preferring a more discreet accessory.

The ideal way to adopt this fashion is to sew a bag that you can match to all your outfits. For example, follow our pattern for Sérac, a half-moon bag ideal for everyday use. Choose a thick fabric like velvet, denim or bright red imitation leather, with plain or printed cotton for the lining.

We also saw a lot of flamboyant red skirts at Fashion Week. To make a long skirt in flowing cotton, follow the Eolya pattern from Moi Je Couds. Or Instinct couture’s Ibaia.

Imitation leather

Already on trend last year, leather is once again in fashion! For a more ethical and less expensive alternative, you may prefer faux leather. Because it’s thinner, it’s less difficult to sew.

All you need to do is follow a few simple rules: change your usual needle for a sturdier one, avoid using pins (which will damage the fabric) and, if you have one, choose a roller presser foot for your sewing machine.

As for patterns, you can make Klafoutis’ perfecto, which will perfectly show off this shiny fabric.

Cobalt blue

Alongside red and pink, this year’s fashion scene will also love cobalt blue. A deep, vivid hue that can be worn either with other bright colors, or with more discreet tones such as gray, beige or white.

To really bring out this original color, look for a medium-thick fabric like denim or cotton gabardine. And make a dungaree dress like the one in Anna Rose. This will allow you to play with colors by pairing it with a white t-shirt or blouse.

And you, what are you planning to sew for spring?
