What to sew for Easter?
Chocolate bunny and hen season is just around the corner!
This year, Easter takes place on April 5, and coincides with the start of spring. It’s an opportunity to sew accessories for the egg hunt, as well as small decorations to brighten up apartments and houses.
A felt basket
Sewing little baskets around Easter is always a great idea. Children can use them to collect their chocolate eggs. Or for adults to decorate a centerpiece, a bookcase, shelves… They can be filled with fabric eggs, chocolates, colorful pieces of fabric…
If you want to sew a small basket with a good hold, you can use felt. It won’t be the strongest fabric, but it will look great, and you can choose from a wide range of colors.
To sew a basket that’s easy to assemble, you can follow Purl Soho’s free pattern, which is handmade and decorated with embroidery threads. Please note: measurements are given in inches!
For a personalized look, you can cut felt shapes and glue or sew them onto the sides of the basket: rabbits, eggs, letters of a first name… You can also sew on fabric or felt ears. Then add eyes and a nose to make a basket reminiscent of a rabbit’s head.

Fabric pouches
Felt is ideal for making decorative objects. But if you’re worried about the kids slipping in too many chocolates and the fabric cracking at the seams, you can opt for fabric baskets like those from Miss Cactus.
Choose fairly sturdy fabrics, such as thick cotton, linen, upholstery fabric or burlap. This will enable the basket to stand upright when placed on a table.
As with the previous project, you can decorate it by adding animal ears, eyes and truffles, children’s names in embroidery or appliqué…
If you prefer to sew a soft pouch closed with a tie, you can make our Easter Bunny pouch. Use a soft cotton such as poplin or cotton voile.
The little pouches can also be used to offer assorted chocolates to people who aren’t taking part in the egg hunt! Something for the whole family.
Fabric animals
To celebrate spring, why not sew some fabric animals? You can place them on the living room table, on shelves, in the children’s bedroom… And, weather permitting, hide them among the chocolates at egg hunt time as a little surprise for your loved ones.
In terms of patterns, there are numerous models available free of charge online for making spring animals: rabbits, chickens, sheep…
For all these seams, don’t hesitate to use colored or printed fabric scraps. You can also add a small pocket on the side of the plush to slip in a few chocolates.
Animals too long to assemble? Sew little eggs from fabric instead, following the C’est du joly pattern. And use a variety of materials and colors.
These little decorations can be used as toys for children, who can play with the different textures.

A garland of pennants
To decorate your living room, dining room or children’s bedroom, you can assemble a garland and hang it on the wall.
The ideal way to sew Easter decorations is to use fabric scraps or recycle old sheets, blouses… Go through your closets and find fabrics in springtime colors or prints that go well together: flowers, pastel shades, polka dots, checks…
To sew a pennant garland, you can follow Janome’s free pattern. It suggests cutting out a rabbit shape from each triangle and lining it with a contrasting fabric.
If you prefer, you can also use the appliqué technique and sew a shape (bunny, chicken, flower, egg…) onto the main fabric.
