What dresses to sew for sunny days?
The sun is back and we’re rethinking our spring wardrobe.
Whether you follow fashion trends or not, here are a few pieces to sew in preparation for the warm weather!
A wrap dress
With its original shape and comfortable cut, the wrap dress will be on trend this year. And just as well, since it’s easy to make. No zippers, buttonholes or collars to assemble… The wrap dress drapes around the body and fastens at the side with a tie.
The Mandarine pattern from Klafoutis can be sewn in children’s or adult’s sizes.
To complete this project, you’ll need a warp and weft fabric. Depending on the fabric you choose, you’ll get a very different look.
Take the time to think about the dress you want to wear.
For a fluid result, choose a fine fabric such as cotton poplin, cotton voile, satin, viscose or wispy linen.
For a drier look, opt for twill, fine denim or gabardine. And if you’re feeling trendy, you can opt for a floral print!

The shirt dress
The shirt dress is a timeless spring wardrobe staple. It can be worn with tights or bare legs, with a cardigan or simply with a light jacket.
The Raisin Blanc by Miss Cactus model ‘s slightly waisted cut makes this piece particularly flattering for any figure.
Unlike the wrap dress, the shirt dress contains a number of technical features that require particular attention to achieve a neat result: the pointed collar, the gathered sleeves and the button placket. This is the sewing technique to choose if you already have some experience, or if you’d like to improve your finishing skills.
As with the wrap dress, the shirt dress should be sewn with a warp-and-weft fabric. It’s particularly elegant with a pretty floral cotton poplin, but you can also opt for linen, a natural material that’s very popular this season.
The babydoll dress
With the 2000s back on trend, we’ll be seeing a lot of very flowing dresses. The nuisette dress, with its supple fall and thin sleeves, will be particularly popular.
If you’d like to sew this lightweight piece, you can follow the Muna Patterns pattern, adjusting the length to suit your size and mood.
To sew this model, you’ll need to choose a very soft, flowing fabric like a black, printed or pastel viscose satin.

A babydoll dress
Already very much on trend last year, the babydoll dress will be back in force this spring! Its short, flared cut makes it the perfect piece for the summer season.
The Moi Je Couds pattern allows you to make different versions of this timeless cut: with a V-neck, with a crossed back held in place with a tie or a simple back… All the ingredients for different variations with printed or plain fabrics.
To sew this dress, you’ll once again need to opt for a warp-and-weft fabric. Choosing a light fiber, such as cotton poplin or viscose, will highlight the drape of the skirt and the oversized sleeves.
This babydoll dress can be worn bare-legged. Or with tights for early spring and cool evenings.

A long bohemian dress
In spring, we like to take inspiration from bohemian looks, wearing floral dresses with ruffles and pretty finishes.
If you’d like to follow this trend and sew yourself a steamy, elegant dress, you can follow Muna Patterns’ Delphinium pattern. An original pattern that combines volume effects with beautiful finishing touches: thin straps, a fitted bodice and a slit at the front of the skirt.
To sew this dress, you can use two contrasting fabrics, a floral or colored one for the main fabric. And a white or cream one for the lining. As the trend is towards lace, you can use broderie anglaise for the underskirt. This will add a romantic touch to your piece.
What are you planning to sew this spring? Have you spotted any dress designs that appeal to you?
