Easy to make and pattern-free, it combines practicality, style and sewing pleasure!

And to make sewing easier, a video tutorial is available at the end of the article.

What you need

To sew this Passport Cover, you will need :

  • 2 rectangles of (H) 15 cm x (L) 20.5 cm for the outside and inside of the Passport Cover. In the tutorial, I use a printed poplin for the outside and a plain poplin for the lining.
  • 1 rectangle (H) 29 cm x (W) 15 cm for card flap.
  • 1 15 cm square for the other flap.

and, of course, your usual sewing equipment.

Les Rabats

Let’s start with the card flap. Place the large rectangle measuring (H) 29 cm x (W) 15 cm upside down and fold it vertically onto itself.

We give the iron a stroke to mark the fold, then we will place 2 marks:

  • the 1st 13 cm from the top of the rectangle.
  • the 2nd 7 cm from the 1st (or 20 cm from the top of the rectangle).

Then it’s on to the folding. We start with the lowest mark, folding backwards at the mark we’ve made.

Finally, fold forward at the 2nd mark (the top one). Each time, give the iron a gentle stroke to mark the folds.

And finally, we’ll top-stitch as close as possible to the 1st fold we’ve made.

Une fois les plis formés, on surpiqûe tout le long du bord plié

Let’s tackle the 2nd flap, and you’ll see that it’s much simpler!

Start by folding the 15 cm square onto itself, marking the fold with an iron and topstitching all along the fold.

Sewing the passport cover

Start by placing the rectangle measuring (H) 15 cm x (W) 20.5 cm in the outer fabric, right-side up.

Then, right sides together, place the flaps on either side, with the raw edges facing outwards. The 2 topstitches we made earlier on the flaps are now on the inside of the passport cover.

On top, right sides together, we place the last rectangle, measuring (H) 15 cm x (W) 20.5 cm, in the lining fabric. Pin in place, and we’ll sew all the way around. BUT, we’ll leave an opening of about 10 cm at the bottom.

The corners are trimmed by cutting into the 45° seam allowances.

Les angles sont dégarnis, puis on retourne le protège-passeport sur l'endroit

Through the opening left at the bottom of the passport cover, turn it right side out. And give it a nice shape by pushing back the corners and seams.

We’ll close the opening by topstitching as close to the edge as possible.

And your passport cover is finished, congratulations to you!
