How to sew Christmas ornaments?
Rather than buying plastic decorations for the Christmas tree or table, why not use your fabric scraps to make small, unique and personal objects?
Here are some quick and easy sewing ideas, even at the last minute, for a 100% DIY Christmas!
Little Christmas trees
If you’re new to sewing and fancy a quick and easy Christmas sewing project, you can make Christmas trees in two different sizes by following our free pattern. By arranging them next to each other on a centerpiece, shelf or bookcase, they create a little fabric forest that you can personalize as you wish.
To sew a small tree, all you need iscotton poplin and wadding. If you don’t have wadding, you can use scraps of fabric or wool, cut into small pieces, to add volume to the tree.
This project can be sewn in a zero-waste spirit, using well-matched fabric scraps. Even scraps from your Christmas projects. Or by purchasing dedicated fabric: decorated with fir trees, stars, festive decorations…
Then simply decorate the project with small ornaments such as buttons to evoke the traditional baubles hanging from Christmas trees, or garlands cut from bias or wool with lurex.

Elves to hang
To sew a fun, personalized decoration, head for the free Miss Cactus Seraphim pattern. It allows you to make a pretty Christmas elf!
It’s a project that can easily be customized by changing the colors. Or by adding clothes. Or by embroidering small details…
You can get the kids involved to make it a collective activity during the vacations. Just let them choose the fabrics and colors, or let them decorate it.
To sew Séraphin, you’ll need a piece of cotton, such as poplin. Also a small piece of fur-like fabric for the beard (you can also knit or crochet it), stuffing (or scraps of wool or fabric) and a Velcro fas tener to join the hands.
Once sewn, the little elf can be hung on the Christmas tree. Or on chairs, doors, stair railings…

A little pouch to give as a gift or to hang up
With our free pattern, you can sew a small tree-shaped pouch. An all-round project, quick and easy to assemble. And it can be used to decorate the Christmas tree (by adding small gifts like Christmas stockings: chocolates, candies…). Or as a small ornament to hang in different parts of the living room. Or as a surprise pouch to place on guests’ plates before the meal begins. You can even slip in a note or a small personal gift.
All you need for this sewing kit are small fabric coupons and ribbons or string to act as a tie.
Little hats for the table
To bring color and volume to the Christmas table, why not sew little Santa hats. You can follow this free pattern (in English, but with plenty of photos detailing each step)?
You can make one for each guest, adding the person’s first name embroidered on the hat or on a small sign. It’s a great way to brighten up the seating plan and give a personalized gift at the same time.
To sew these little Santa hats, you’ll need red and white fabric. The original pattern uses felt, but you can choose a cotton fabric to which you’ll add iron-on to make it firmer. Anda little wadding for padding.
Miniature Christmas trees made from fabric scraps
If you have lots of scrap coupons from your sewing projects, you can sew little Christmas trees.
If your fabric is thin (e.g. viscose or cotton voile), you can add wadding to give it a better hold. The idea is simply to assemble two tree shapes on the reverse side, leaving a small gap to turn the whole thing over in the right direction, like a cushion. All that’s left is to stuff it, if necessary, and close it with a discreet seam. Then add a tie.
Then, of course, hang it on the Christmas tree or place it on the festive table!
What about you? Do you usually sew Christmas decorations?
