Linen dresses, light jackets, flowing pants… Spring is just around the corner and we’re starting to feel like pulling out our favourite clothes from the closet!

Here are a few sewing ideas to get the season off to a good start and, if need be, give the kids a wardrobe makeover.

Baggy pants

The star pant of the 2000s is making a comeback! For the past few months, kids and teens alike have been swearing by baggy pants. These comfortable, wide-legged pants can be worn long enough and made from a variety of fabrics: denim, chambray (black, blue, colored…), corduroy…

The baggy presents the same technical difficulties as classic jeans: fitting a fly, assembling belt loops and pockets.

You can take on this project if you’ve already mastered your sewing machine, or if you’d like to challenge yourself!

In terms of pattern, Capacha’s Alvida model offers numerous variations, including pockets. It’s the perfect baggy for your child or teenager.

Bangs are in fashion this year! The perfect opportunity to add some to your bags, pants, sweatshirts and children’s T-shirts.

If you like that original touch, you can sew the Rêve de Moi je couds pattern, a short- or long-sleeved t-shirt with bangs on either side of the front and back. This pattern is made from jersey, which can be thicker or thinner, depending on the desired effect.

The bangs can be sewn with the same fabric, for a tone-on-tone effect, or with a contrasting fabric. Fine suede, printed jersey, cotton, for example…

A color block sweater

Sweatshirts are a very practical piece to have in children’s mid-season wardrobes. It provides morning and evening coverage, and can be easily removed when temperatures rise during the day.

We can match this basic with one of the season’s trends, color block, which consists of wearing several colors on large closets.

Our Rollot sweatshirt allows you to match different shades. To sew this garment, you’ll need to choose two sweatshirt fabrics or two fleeces. You can opt for similar colors or, on the contrary, prefer two very contrasting, bright fabrics.

For a uniform result, it’s best to choose a fabric of the same thickness and material.

You don’t need a serger to get the job done, just equip your sewing machine with a special sweatshirt needle.

Rollot is a good project for learning about stretch fabrics.

Sew-on bombers for kids

The arrival of spring offers the perfect opportunity to create lightweight, practical mid-season jackets. If you’re looking for something timeless and comfortable, why not sew a bomber jacket?

This short jacket, tightened at the bottom by a ribbed hem, has the advantage of being very easy to personalize. It will look totally different depending on the fabric chosen, and can be easily adapted to the seasons: spring, cool summer mornings and autumn.

If you feel like sewing it for the return of warm weather, you can choose a floral jacquard; a thick cotton with a spring motif or a stretch fabric such as fleece or sweatshirt.

The Ibis Kid pattern allows you to sew and personalize this piece according to your children’s desires. It’s a great way to get to grips with zippers and ribbing, especially on the point collar.

How to sew the Roquefort baby and child vest?

A shepherd’s vest

If you’re looking for a quick and easy sewing pattern to get you started with spring sewing, you can make our Roquefort vest, inspired by the sleeveless shepherd’s vest.

As it requires relatively little fabric (70 cm for the main fabric and 70 cm for the lining), you can use fabric scraps: faux fur, minky, fleece…

For the lining, you’ll need a fairly light cotton such as poplin. This lightweight jacket will be ideal for those first days in the sun!
