Which bags to sew for spring?
What better way to prepare for the warm weather than by sewing yourself a new bag?
Colors, shapes, patterns… Here are some ideas on how to make this essential accessory yourself!
A bucket bag
On-trend for some years now, the bucket bag is a very practical model for everyday use. Its wide bottom and height allow you to carry your belongings without running out of space. Over the years, all the major leather goods brands have created their own variations of this piece.
It’s perfectly possible to make your own, following the pattern of La Petite Canette. Choose a fairly thick fabric, such as velvet, denim or upholstery. The model includes a leather handle and lace (to close the bag), but you may prefer a fabric or imitation leather strap.
This year, the trend is for bags in very flashy, vitamin-rich colors: fuchsia, turquoise blue, bright red, acid green, canary yellow… If you like to have several bags, you can sew the same model in different shades, so you can match your accessories to your spring outfits.
A pretty pouch
If you’re a minimalist who likes to leave the house with the bare minimum, clutches will also be very trendy this spring! They’ll be perfect for carrying keys, IDs and phones.
The Miss Cactus and Les Patronnes patterns each offer the possibility of making different versions: with or without bottom, with or without decorative bow, with or without handle… So you can find the pattern that suits you and your uses perfectly.
To sew a pouch, you need to choose a thick fabric, such as canvas, which you then reinforce with interlining.
For a more elegant effect, you can opt instead for black or colored imitation leather.
And if you feel like following another of the season’s big trends, add matching bangs to the front of your clutch. To do this, simply provide a second piece of fabric the same size as the main fabric (you’ll join these two pieces along one of the long sides). Then cut thin strips along ¾ of the height.
A backpack
Spring means walks and first hikes! It’s the perfect opportunity to sew yourself a backpack with a water bottle, a snack, books and a pair of sunglasses.
To get started on this project, following the Petite Canette pattern for example, you need to anticipate your haberdashery needs and buy straps, zippers, adjustment buckles, fastening systems… If you’re keen to complete this sewing project before spring, you can start gathering the necessary materials.
In terms of fabric, as with our previous models, we recommend thick, sturdy materials. The bag needs to hold together well and not tear under weight. You can always reinforce the chosen fabric with thick fusible webbing.
Feel free to personalize it by using different colors, choosing bright or contrasting straps, adding pockets, embroidery, patches… It’s a project that’s very easy to make your own!
A fanny pack
The fanny pack continues to be a perfect summer project. Easy enough to assemble, it allows you to familiarize yourself with many technical points (zipper, lining, strap…). It’s a handy bag to have on hand when you’re out for a walk or a day’s shopping.

A bowling bag
This street wear piece will be very fashionable this year! And it’s not very complicated to assemble, even if you’re a beginner at sewing. All you need to master is how to attach a zipper along the length of the bag.
You can follow Super Bison’s Bowling Yogi pattern. And make it with denim, upholstery fabric, coated cotton, quilted…
For this very casual bag, opt for bright colors or a mix of pastels, which will give it more character.
